IAA: Baerbock warns car manufacturers: “Reduce dependencies”

The Foreign Minister is visiting the IAA motor show in Munich and speaks of the newly shuffled cards on the automobile market.

After Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) also visited the IAA motor show in Munich. She warned to “reduce dependencies on individual markets”.

The German automotive industry sells almost a third of its cars in China and also obtains many raw materials and components, for example for batteries, from there. The German automotive industry is very reluctant to comment on China’s threats of an invasion of the democratic island republic of Taiwan and the possible consequences.

Baerbock said the cards in the automotive market are currently being reshuffled. “This is also an opportunity to learn from old mistakes and to reduce dependencies on individual markets and to become a leader in climate-neutral mobility. For our country, where the automotive industry accounts for a large part of the added value, this is not only an economic one, but also a safety issue.”

At the trade fair, the minister visited the stands of VW and Bosch, had Siemens charging stations explained to her and sat in the latest vehicle from the Munich car manufacturer in the presence of BMW boss Oliver Zipse.
