2020 was a strong year for the organic market. The growth continues, albeit a little more subdued.
According to experts, the organic market continues to grow. Growth as strong as 2020 will not be achieved this year, said Tina Andres, the designated chairman of the board of the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW).
The reduction of meat consumption, plant-based alternatives and regionality in food increasingly played an important role for consumers.
BÖLW intends to present precise figures on the development of the organic market in February 2022 at the world’s largest organic food fair, Biofach, in Nuremberg. The focus there will be on the question of how organic can make food production more climate-friendly. Organic farms have a significantly better carbon footprint than conventional ones, said Andres. Therefore, more effective incentives to convert agriculture are needed.
According to BÖLW, the growth of organic areas in Germany had recently weakened. In 2020, this had increased by around 5 percent compared to the previous year, making it around 10 percent of all agricultural land. The goal of the federal government that 20 percent of the German agricultural area should be farmed organically by 2030 is still a long way off, said Andres.
From February 15 to 18, 2022, exhibitors from numerous countries will show their new products and innovations at Biofach and the Vivaness natural cosmetics fair, which is being held at the same time. According to the trade fair, one focus is on unpackaged products and avoiding waste.
