Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) defended the planned LNG terminal on Rügen against the sometimes harsh criticism on the island. “The bottom line is that this is a project that is part of the national energy security strategy,” said Habeck on the sidelines of a conference in Rostock.
Mukran is a large port where, in principle, industry actually belongs. “In this respect, of the difficult alternatives, it is certainly the best that we have found.” Even if the gas supply emergency has been averted, it has not been overcome. It is wrong and negligent to claim that the terminal is not necessary because there is no longer any need to fear an emergency.
He hopes that the “how” of the project will bring about peace. “I can’t question whether,” said Habeck. “This is an important project and we are promoting it and, in a certain sense, we are also fighting politically to ensure that it is realized.”
According to federal plans, the terminal in Mukran in the north of Rügen should be ready for operation next winter. According to the federal government, the terminal is important for the security of the energy supply even in the event of a cold winter or if other delivery routes fail. Critics, on the other hand, speak of unneeded excess capacity and fear for Rügen’s environment and tourism, which is important for the island.
