Sparkling wine from Germany is increasingly in demand. Sales by member companies in the Association of German Sparkling Wine Cellars (VDS) at home and abroad in 2022 were around 2.8 percent higher than the previous year at 284.6 million bottles, as VDS managing director Alexander Tacer told the German Press Agency in Mainz .
“This means we are well on the way to reaching pre-pandemic levels again.” According to its own information, the association is responsible for around 95 percent of sparkling wine production in Germany.
Within Germany, around 2.3 percent more 0.75 liter sparkling wine bottles were sold last year than in 2021, a total of around 247.9 million bottles. This positive trend will continue in the first half of 2023, said Tacer. Domestic sales grew by another 6.5 percent compared to the first six months of 2022 to around 109.3 million bottles.
The increasing demand for rosé sparkling wine also continues: around one in six bottles of sparkling wine sold (16.4 percent) is now part of it. The niche product of non-alcoholic sparkling wine is also growing. Sales of these drinks increased by 7.2 percent.
