The mining industry has had 29 consecutive months of year-on-year job creation

During the month of May 2023 the employment miner in Argentina it reached 38,853 jobswhich represented a 6.8% growth compared to May 2022, according to a report published by the Directorate of Transparency and Mining Information, belonging to the Undersecretary of Mining Development

This variation implies the creation of 2,480 direct formal jobs in the sector in said period. At this level of employment in May, mining represented 0.6% of total registered salaried private sector employment.

In this way, the sector reached 29 consecutive months with year-on-year increases in the number of jobs.

Mining employment by sector

During May 2023, 11,202 jobs were registered linked to metal projects in production (28.8% of the total). Second, services and activities related to mining, 8,624 positions (22.2% of the total). Third place, application rocks, 6,197 positions (15.9% of the total). Fourth place, production of non-metallic minerals with 3,412 jobs (8.8% of the total) and in fifth place, production of lithium 2,898 jobs (7.5% of the total).

Marking a year-on-year increase of 36.6% (777 new positions). These numbers define that it is the sector that generated the most employment in absolute terms year-on-year.

Companies in the mining sector

In May 2023, a total of 1,038 mining companies were counted, 24 less than in May 2022, marking a year-on-year decrease of 2.3% in the number of companies in the sector.

34.8% (361) of the companies corresponded to the application rocks category. In second place is the category of services and activities related to mining, 31.4% (326). In third place, production of minerals not previously classified, 17.9% (186) and, in fourth place, production of non-metalliferous minerals, 7.8% (81) of the total.

Mining employment by gender

During May 2023, female mining employment reached 4,375 jobs, which represented 11.3% of total mining employment. This number implied an increase of 20.2% year-on-year (735 additional positions), while male mining employment increased by 5.3% year-on-year (1,745 new jobs for the sector).

In May 2023, the category of metal projects in production was the one that held the most women with 1,251 (28.6% of female mining employment) jobs that represent 11.2% of employment in the category. In addition, it had an increase of 7.3% year-on-year. In turn, the exploration and financing of metal mining employed 144 women (3.3% of female mining employment), representing 11.9% of the sector, having an interannual growth of 7.5%.
