The Minister of Economy and presidential candidate of Unión por la Patria, Sergio Massareiterated the need to move forward with a “progressive tax reform”, in addition to fiscal simplification, and insisted that Argentina will reach surplus in 2024. He also referred to the half profit penalty.
In dialogue with the Hard to Tame program on C5N, the head of the Treasury considered that “Argentina needs to rediscuss its entire tax system” which requires “greater progressivity, greater simplification” and a “rearrangement between what we charge Nation, Province and Municipalitiesregarding the fact that sometimes there is double or triple taxation on the same product”.
In this regard, he said that one of his campaign proposals is “to go towards a new federal pact, where we tell people what each national, provincial and municipal government is responsible for.” A reform of this caliber must occur “in a framework of dialogue and unity,” added Massa.
“When you look at the composition of a price in a supermarket, you have 21% VAT, you have 5% Gross Income and another 3% Safety and Hygiene Tax. That means that people pay 29% more for the product that is going to consume. “We have to encourage ourselves to have these discussions so that our people can recover income and live better.”Massa warned.
Half Penalty of Profits
Likewise, the UP candidate expressed his satisfaction after the Chamber of Deputies gave half approval to the bill that eliminates the fourth category of the Income Tax. “Today we took a big step”he assured.
Massa recalled that until the end of the year those workers who earn a salary of up to 15 minimum wages (less than $1,700,000) will be exempt from paying the tax by the decree he signed a week ago and warned that the measures he has been announcing in recent weeks reflect the agenda he will have as president if elected.
Regarding the order of Patricia Bullrich to send the deputies of Together for Change to vote against the project and of Javier Milei to accompany the initiative, he stated: “If there is one thing people have in mind, it is Mauricio Macri promising that the workers will not “They were going to pay more Income Tax. Well, they ended up paying double.”
“People felt cheated. They had the opportunity to correct, to make amends for that mistake. In that sense, La Libertad Avanza’s position was more genuine,” Massa added.
Fiscal surplus
The presidential candidate of the ruling party reiterated that, if elected, on December 10 he will call a national unity governmentwhich “will require listening to others, bringing positions closer, also giving in, and choosing a line of work for the country and sustaining it.”
Regarding the 2024 Budget bill that he also sent to Congress, and which will be discussed after the elections, he once again expressed his intention to reach “1% fiscal surplus” next year and he stressed that to reach that goal, Argentina needs “a progressive tax system.”
