Economy: Car sales in the EU are recovering from bottlenecks

A sigh of relief in the German automotive industry: The European sales market is recovering. Registrations of electric cars are increasing significantly.

Car sales in the EU are recovering significantly from the supplier bottlenecks. In August, 787,626 new cars were registered, 21 percent more than a year earlier, according to the European industry association Acea.

Almost 7.1 million cars were sold in the first eight months of the year. That is almost 2 million fewer than in the pre-Corona year 2019. The shortage of electronic chips and other components slowed car production in 2022.

Significantly more electric cars

Registrations of purely battery-electric cars increased significantly again in August. With 165,165 cars, more than twice as many new vehicles were registered as the year before. In addition, their market share exceeded the 20 percent threshold for the first time. The proportion of battery-powered cars is rising particularly sharply in Belgium, but in Germany the increase was also comparatively strong at 170 percent.
