Gabriele Rost-Brasholz is 76 years old and one of the most successful senior runners in the world. The retired teacher only started running when she was 40. Since then she has been winning one medal after another. She tells “Die Boss” why it is never too late to start running, why running is a liberation for her and how to start running in the first place.
Gabriele Rost-Brasholz is a fighter. One who never gives up. She started running at the age of 40. Now 76 years old, she has won countless competitions and is one of the most successful senior runners in the world. “I ran around the globe more than twice. I think 100,000 kilometers in 37 years and I never gave up, not even before, no matter what,” she says in the stern podcast “Die Boss”.
Shaped by traumatic childhood experiences, running has become a liberation for the former sports and English teacher from Delmenhorst. “I really always had to fight for survival, even in the physical sense, because death was always hanging over me due to the aggression,” she remembers life as a child in the post-war period. With her sister, her father and her mentally ill mother They lived together in a room and often had to go hungry.
“Maximum penalty: bad weather and I can’t go out”
The senior got into running by chance. The then 40-year-old started running during a spa stay. Since then she has been winning one medal after another. “The first thing I did after school: put my bag in the corner, put on my running gear and started running. That’s when I always let myself run,” says the retired teacher. Whether short or long distance, track or cross country running, rust -Brasholz never misses a competition. “Today is the maximum punishment for me: bad weather and I can’t go out.”
