The president once again highlighted the impossibility of taking action regarding the behavior of the Argentine exchange rate.

President Luis Lacalle Pou assured that the exchange rate difference with Argentina generates a certain “impotence” in the Uruguayan tourism sector and once again highlighted the fact of the impossibility of action in the face of the different exchange rate behavior on the neighboring shore.

The head of state’s words took place within the framework of the commemoration of World Tourism Day, celebrated on Tuesday in Melilla (Montevideo) and organized by the Uruguayan Chamber of Tourism. The Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, and the Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, among other national authorities, also participated in the event.

In his speech, Lacalle Pou indicated that “in this departure of
the pandemic there are sectors that took off, and there are others that
many elements came together”, in reference to the difference
exchange rate with Argentina that hits the tourism sector and the historic drought that devastated the national countryside in recent months.

Along these lines, he stressed that these current elements “generate a certain helplessness because they do not depend on ourselves,” because “our largest tourism supplier, which is Argentina, has an exchange rate situation with respect to us, which makes it very complex for “We can influence.”

The people of the coast know it well, we have taken measures that are never enough,” said the president. “We have taken measures that deal with the material, but we also have to be present for a psychological and emotional issue,” he stressed.

Lacalle Pou emphasized that the government “is on the side of the sec-
tourism sector, for what it has fought for, for what it has faced with that characteristic humor of the tourism sector and its professionalism.”

For his part, Minister Mieres highlighted the “enormous resilience” demonstrated by the Uruguayan tourism sector to face the current context. “If there was a sector that was especially affected (by the pandemic) it was tourism, and now when we were already in a different stage, this new setback appears that means this situation of competitiveness with neighboring (countries), which directly affects the whole of tourist activity,” said the official.
