Austria has a long tradition of volunteer culture. Now the Voluntary Social Year is being upgraded through certain measures. In this way, the aim is to bring more young people into health and social professions. A corresponding amendment was passed in the Social Committee of the National Council in June. For participants in the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) and the Voluntary Environmental Protection Year (FUJ), pocket money is almost doubled: from an average of 260 euros to the maximum amount of the low income limit – currently around 500 euros per month.

There will also be greater financial support in the future for participants in memorial, peace and social services abroad. In addition, those who volunteer receive a free climate ticket. A new state award for volunteer work will also ensure greater appreciation. Awards are planned in different categories.

Advice options are strengthened

The consultation options are also being improved. To this end, the existing structures in the federal states will be significantly strengthened. In addition to the continuation of the pilot project of a nationwide service and competence center for voluntary work in Austria, this also includes separate project funding for the volunteer centers in the individual federal states.
