X Social Media argued in a Florida federal court on Monday that Musk’s renaming of Twitter in July violated his right to the trademark. The advertising agency has been using “X Social Media” since 2016 and has invested more than $400 million in Facebook advertising. Twitter’s renaming confused customers and resulted in lost revenue. X Social Media is demanding that Musk’s service be banned from using the letter and is seeking damages.
There were no statements from X or X Social Media. Musk’s company could potentially face numerous trademark disputes over the letter “X,” which appears in hundreds of trademarked names. Large technology companies such as Microsoft and Meta also have some of them.
