The former free app provider sms.at is turning off the power after 24 years. At its best, it said it had 800,000 users and over 30 million SMS messages per month were sent via the platform, owner Link Mobility Austria announced on Wednesday. Recently there were only 100,000 SMS per month.
The big user advantage before the introduction of smartphones and flat rates: sms.at was initially free and the messages could be typed on a PC and laptop. WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok didn’t exist back then; SMS (“Short Message Service”) were either significantly limited in number in cell phone tariffs or were chargeable at all.
