The Government will enable the voluntary renunciation of transport subsidies

It will be available from this Friday. In addition to reducing spending, it seeks to expose the impact of a generalized reduction like the one proposed by the opposition. The bus would cost $700 and the train, $1,100.

Diego Giuliano

The Minister of Transportation of the Nation, Diego Giuliano, announced yesterday at a press conference the implementation of a system so that passengers can voluntarily renounce the subsidies applied to the fares of buses and trains of the AMBA and the areas where the service has national jurisdiction because it passes through more than one district.

The official specified that the resignation can be managed from Friday, October 20 through the website argentina.gob.ar/SUBE. One of the objectives is to reduce the amount of subsidies disbursed by the national State by transferring that cost to users who register to resign from that assistance. However, just days before the general elections, the Government’s intention is also to highlight the impact that a general elimination of subsidies such as the one proposed by Juntos por el Cambio and La Libertad Avanza would have on rates.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Transportation, the bus ticket in the AMBA will go from the current minimum of $52.96 to $700 only for those who expressly waive the subsidy. On trains, it will go from between $11.57 and $52.95 (depending on the line) to $1,100. “Society has to think about the impact of what is said,” said Giuliano in reference to the opposition’s proposals to adjust spending in this way. “Those who agree with the no-subsidy policy should resign, we give them that opportunity,” said the official.

People who decide to give up will also receive other benefits, such as “Red SUBE”, which grants discounts of 50% and 75% for the second and third consecutive ticket, respectively; as is the federal social attribute, which provides a 55% discount for retirees and other vulnerable sectors.

The form to make the resignation will be available from October 20. And between that day and Friday the 27th, passengers will be able to ask bus drivers to charge the full fare. Starting October 27, those who have resigned will pay the full rate automatically through the increase.

Those who decide not to voluntarily resign will keep the subsidy in force. Currently, rates are frozen until December: this was decided by the Government along with other measures to mitigate the impact of the August devaluation.

Once the measure is made official, the Government will invite the provinces to implement a similar registry to allow users who want to waive the subsidy to do so in their districts. Currently, some 53 jurisdictions have the SUBE system, so they could be included in the same voluntary resignation system implemented by the Nation.

So far in 2023, Transportation has spent $307,927 million on the “Transportation Infrastructure System Trust Fund” program, through which transfers are made from the national State to bus companies.
