Air traffic: Lufthansa puts new subsidiary into operation

The group has repeatedly criticized the cost structure of the feeder flights as being too high. One point of contention with the unions was the salaries of the flying staff. What should happen now?

The Lufthansa Group will put its new subsidiary City Airlines into operation from next summer. The company, founded in June, is intended to provide feeder services to long-haul flights from the Frankfurt and Munich hubs, as the group announced on Wednesday.

To date, these flights have been provided by the core company Lufthansa itself or by Lufthansa Cityline. Nothing will change for customers when booking because the tickets will continue to be sold exclusively through Lufthansa.

Initially, Airbus A319 aircraft will be used, of which at least four or five should be in operation by the end of 2024, according to dpa information. Lufthansa is also examining the possible uses for Airbus A220 or Embraer E2, which would have to be purchased.

In the past, the group has repeatedly criticized the cost structure of feeder flights as being too high. One point of contention with the unions was the salaries of the flying staff.

The new company’s first pilots and flight attendants are to be recruited from November onwards under collective bargaining conditions below the core brand. The Cockpit pilots’ union has announced that it will seek a collective agreement for City Airlines. According to Lufthansa, discussions with the social partners have already begun.
