Energy: Pipeline for Rügen LNG terminal fully approved

Work on the connection pipeline for the controversial LNG terminal is in full swing. After approval of the last section, you can move on. However, an important approval is still pending.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has approved the last section and thus the complete connection line for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal planned on the island of Rügen. The Stralsund Mining Authority announced on Wednesday that all construction work and subsequent operation had also been approved for the second section of the lake up to the planned terminal in Mukran.

The authority had already approved the first section of the lake, which covers 26 kilometers from Lubmin on the Western Pomeranian mainland through the Greifswalder Bodden to the coast of southeast Rügen, in August. The landing points in Lubmin and Mukran have also already been approved. Associations had failed before the Federal Administrative Court with urgent applications and a desired construction stop for the line.

The federal government considers the terminal in Mukran to be necessary, citing security of energy supply, and wants it to be operational in winter. Critics speak of unneeded overcapacity and risks for the environment and tourism in the region. A different licensing authority is responsible for the actual terminal in Mukran and the operation of the special ships there. This process is still ongoing.

LNG terminals are intended to secure gas supplies to Germany and other countries after Russia stopped pipeline supplies last year. Systems are already in operation in Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel on the North Sea as well as in Lubmin.
