The influential Mexican businessman and president of Grupo Carso, Carlos Slimparticipated in an Ibero-American forum organized by the Círculo de Montevideo Foundation, entitled “ The rebirth of ethics“.
During his speech, Slim raised a somewhat controversial proposal: a labor reform that could transform the way we conceive the working day and retirement.
Slim proposed that the working day should consist of 12 hours of workdistributed in just three days a week. Furthermore, he suggested that the retirement age will rise to 75 years. His reasoning is based on the idea that these measures They could allow more people to enter the labor market.
The businessman argued that life expectancy has increased considerably in modern society, reaching 90 or even 95 years in some cases. Therefore, The retirement age should adjust to this constantly evolving demographic reality.
Slim and his reasoning
Slim highlighted a common challenge that countries face with social security and pension policies: a significantly high labor liability generated by retirements. This often exceeds the available resources of the State, underlining the importance of delaying the retirement age to ensure the sustainability of these systems.
In addition to his proposals related to labor reform and retirement, CCarlos Slim addressed the importance of competition in global markets. In his opinion, territorial conflicts, which were a characteristic of agricultural societies of the past, must give way to competition to conquer international markets through national technological and economic development.
Finally, Slim stressed the need to combat poverty and marginalization, considering that this investment is essential to incorporate people into modernity, the economy and the labor market. In his words, “the best investment is fighting poverty” because it strengthens a country, benefits businessmen, governments and, of course, the population in general.
Carlos Slim’s perspectives and proposals in this forum have generated a significant debate about ethics, economics and work in a constantly evolving world.
