In the Corona crisis, people went less to restaurants and more shopping. This is also noticeable in the sales of Lidl and Kaufland.
The Schwarz Group with its supermarket chains Lidl and Kaufland grew significantly in the past 2020/21 financial year (February 28).
Revenues climbed to 125.3 billion euros after 114.3 billion euros in the same period of the previous year, as the company in Neckarsulm (Heilbronn district) announced on Thursday. Upon request, the company did not want to give reasons for the increase in sales. The Schwarz Group employs around 500,000 men and women worldwide.
The Lidl and Kaufland retail divisions have more than 12,900 branches. Kaufland increased store sales by 7.5 percent to 25.5 billion euros and Lidl achieved a sales increase of 9.9 percent to 96.3 billion euros. The environmental service provider PreZero increased its revenues in the past fiscal year by 33.7 percent to around 700 million euros. The grocery trade is one of the winners of the Corona crisis, as consumers had to forego restaurants during the lockdown and went shopping more.
Only recently, the boss at Europe’s largest grocer, Klaus Gehrig, surprisingly resigned from his position. Gehrig’s successor is to be his current deputy, 49-year-old Lidl boss Gerd Chrzanowski. The succession plan was announced last year. According to earlier statements, owner Dieter Schwarz wants to take on the general partner’s function, which Gehrig has vacated, until Chrzanowski can take over the mandate.
