Bonds: Why you should talk about money in the family

In our finance-savvy author’s family there are two brothers who haven’t talked about borrowing money for a long time – which, in retrospect, is a real shame.

The two grew up together. They lived next door to each other for decades and talked about a lot of things – just not money. A costly mistake. One brother is a civil servant, in his late 50s, a homeowner and father of two. The other is in his early 60s and has mild mental disabilities. He lives in rent with the younger man and hasn’t earned much throughout his life. One would think that not enough to build wealth. And that’s what the younger brother thought too – until the day a few months ago when the older brother mentioned in a subordinate clause that he had “something lying around”.
