ChatGPT users were repeatedly frustrated that the chatbot’s knowledge of the world abruptly ended in September 2021. Now ChatGPT knows 18 months more of world history.
The popular AI chatbot ChatGPT will be informed about events until April this year. So far, the program’s knowledge of the world ended in September 2021. The developer company OpenAI will strive to never be so far behind again, said its boss Sam Altman. People were at least as annoyed by it as the users. The timeliness of the information should be further improved in the future.
Shortly before the OpenAI announcement, tech billionaire Elon Musk presented a chatbot from his AI company X.AI, which can access fresh information from the online platform X (formerly Twitter), which he also owns.
According to OpenAI, around 100 million users access ChatGPT every week. The chatbot now runs on the new generation of AI technology called GPT-4 Turbo introduced by OpenAI on Monday. With the introduction of the new GPT version, OpenAI is also lowering the prices for use by developers – to one US cent per 1000 requests and three cents per 1000 responses. GPT-4 Turbo can also accept much longer requests than before.
Specialized chatbots for individual tasks
Other innovations include the ability to more easily create specialized chatbots for individual tasks. This could, for example, be about advice on removing stains from laundry or explaining the rules of board games.
OpenAI calls such assistants GPTs – and, according to Altman, they can be programmed using voice alone. On the stage of OpenAI’s first developer conference, he set up a chatbot with just a few sentences to give advice to start-up founders.
This feature could undermine the business of companies that specialize in customizing ChatGPT for specific applications. At the same time, OpenAI will share its proceeds with the authors of the “most used and useful” GPTs, Altman announced. There should be more details about this later.
AI chatbots like ChatGPT can formulate texts at the linguistic level of a human. The principle behind this is that they estimate, word by word, how a sentence should continue. The models are trained with enormous amounts of information. The release of ChatGPT at the end of last year sparked a worldwide hype around artificial intelligence.
