The main reason for this is the increase in fuel and heating oil prices. According to the Energy Agency, energy prices had a slight dampening effect on the general level of inflation, and prices were also 1.3 percent below the level of the same month last year. The prices at the petrol pumps in particular have increased recently: for a typical tank of 50 liters you had to pay between 85 and 89 euros for both diesel and super. This corresponds to around 5 euros more than in August 2023, according to the energy agency. Compared to the previous year, however, refueling was still a little cheaper, especially with diesel.
Plus of 6.2 percent for heating oil
A similar picture emerges for heating oil, which rose significantly in price month-on-month, increasing by 6.2 percent. The Energy Agency illustrates this using the “typical” annual requirement of 3,000 liters: In September, almost 4,000 euros had to be paid for this, around 200 euros more than in the previous month of August. After all, a look at current market data suggests that “a slight relaxation in gasoline, diesel and heating oil prices can be expected.”
The prices for district heating also grew by one percent compared to the previous month. Year-on-year it is actually 22.2 percent more, although prices have tended to fall in recent months. Prices for gas (minus 0.6 percent compared to August) and electricity (minus 1.4 percent compared to August) fell slightly. While gas prices were significantly above the previous year’s level (plus 38.6 percent), they fell sharply for electricity compared to September 2022, falling by 23.7 percent. The prices for wood pellets and firewood were also slightly higher than in August, but there were also price declines compared to the previous year.
