Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir wants to accelerate the further expansion of the market for organic products in Germany. The desired growth opens up additional opportunities for the entire food industry, said the Green politician on Thursday in Berlin.
A strategy now presented by the ministry provides for various measures for this purpose. This includes increased research to increase yields from organic farming. Consumers should be more informed about the benefits of organic production for environmental and animal protection. An important lever should also be more organic offerings in canteens and restaurants.
The aim of the traffic light coalition is to expand the share of organic farming to 30 percent of the total agricultural area by 2030. Most recently, the proportion of organically managed fields and meadows continued to rise slightly and was 11.2 percent at the end of 2022. 14.2 percent of all farms now work organically.
