Those who visit Austria usually also buy the world-famous Mozartkugeln. But now a well-known manufacturer had to file for bankruptcy.
Mozart balls are a popular souvenir from Austria. In the future, however, there could be one less manufacturer who produces the famous chocolates. Because the Salzburg Regional Court opened bankruptcy proceedings on Tuesday against the confectionery manufacturer Salzburg Schokolade, based in Grödig. This is reported by several Austrian and German media outlets.
Manufacturer of the “Echte Salzburger Mozartkugeln” from Mirabell fears for its existence
In addition to numerous other sweets and specialties, the Salzburg company produces the “Real Salzburg Mozartkugel” from Mirabell exclusively for the US company Mondelez. This makes Salzburg Schokolade one of several producers in Austria that produces the round pralines.
Mozart balls are small chocolate balls withNougat and pistachio marzipan. Wrapped in packaging made of gold-colored foil with a portrait of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born in Salzburg in 1756, they are world-famous specialties of the Alpine republic and have therefore been very popular with tourists for decades.
That was exactly the problem in the end: Because of the corona pandemic, there have recently been significantly fewer travelers in Austria, the sale of Mozartkugeln suffered greatly – just like many other popular tourism products in Austria.
The fact that many festivals and events could not take place during the pandemic also contributed to the decline in sales, it said. Mozart balls are also traditionally a popular sweet at such festivities. Since there were fewer family celebrations, fewer Mozartkugeln were given away in private.
The country’s media had no answer on Tuesday as to whether the Mozartkugeln could be running out in Austria. However, so far nothing indicates this, as the small pralines are also made by other producers.
Talks are currently underway about how and whether the traditional Salzburg company can be continued. This is what the employees of the chocolate producers founded at the end of the 19th century are currently hoping for – and probably all those with a sweet tooth from home and abroad too.
