Society : Survey: Financial confidence is declining

Fewer people believe that their financial situation will be positive in ten years. Confidence in retirement provision is also low among people who put money aside in addition to their statutory pension.

According to a survey, in difficult economic times, many citizens are increasingly skeptical about their financial prospects, especially among the older generation. 60 percent believe that their financial situation will be positive in ten years – four points less than in 2022, as the life insurance company Swiss Life announced, citing the survey.

Among retired older people, 46 percent are optimistic. In the previous survey it was just over half. The opinion research institute Bilendi surveyed 1,000 women and men aged 18 and over for the representative survey in June and July on behalf of the company.

Confidence in retirement provision is also low among people who put money aside in addition to the statutory pension: 32 percent believe that state and private pension provision will enable them to lead a self-determined life in old age.

According to the survey, the assessments are partly self-critical: “Only a third of the people surveyed have planned their financial resources for retirement well,” explained Swiss Life Germany boss Jörg Arnold.

Significant gender difference in survey

According to the survey, there is a clear gender difference: 35 percent of men see their personal finances in a good position for old age, but only 24 percent of women do. According to the survey, a quarter of those surveyed think that they have taken care of their own retirement provision too late.

However, general satisfaction with their own lives has barely fallen: 40 percent said they were satisfied or very satisfied overall, one point less than a year earlier.
