The decision was announced almost two weeks ago. The approval would have expired in mid-December without renewal, but now it runs until December 2033. Previously, there was neither a sufficient majority among the EU states for nor against further use of the drug. The EU Commission was then able to make a decision on its own.
Among other things, there is controversy about whether glyphosate could be carcinogenic. There are also dangers for the environment. A complex investigation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently found no unacceptable dangers, but did point out data gaps in several areas.
The environmental protection organization Greenpeace immediately criticized it on Tuesday evening. “The EU Commission’s decision means that the probably carcinogenic plant poison glyphosate can be sprayed on our fields for another ten years,” said agricultural expert Sebastian Theissing-Matei to the APA. With this decision, the EU Commission is rolling out the red carpet for the agricultural lobby, while the protection of health and nature has to wait,” it said.
