In Austria, the rate of homeowners has recently fallen. According to Eurostat, the value fell from 54 to 51 percent last year. Austria therefore has the second lowest ownership rate in the EU after Germany. The Federal Republic is the only EU country with more tenants than owners. The proportion of owners there fell from 49 to 47 percent in 2023.
According to Eurostat, the ownership rate across the EU fell by almost one percentage point. Overall, 69 percent are owners and 31 percent are renters. The ownership rate is particularly high in eastern EU countries such as Romania (95 percent), Slovakia (93 percent), Croatia (91 percent) and Hungary (90 percent).

In addition to Austria, the lowest ownership rates outside of Germany are found in Denmark (60 percent) and France (63 percent). Outside the EU, Switzerland has an even lower ownership share (42 percent) than Germany.
