Mobility: Battle for combustion engines: imminent EU solution?

In March, the EU states decided to end new registrations of new cars with combustion engines from 2035. Volker Wissing would like to find a solution that still allows registration.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing expects an imminent breakthrough for the continued existence of new cars with combustion engines. The plan is to find a solution within the next three weeks – “and that is quite possible,” said the FDP politician in Brussels. Then there is a separate category for vehicles that can only be fueled with synthetic fuels. According to previous information, this is needed so that new cars with combustion engines can be registered after 2035.

In March, after weeks of blocking Germany, the EU states finally decided that from 2035 no new cars that run on gasoline or diesel will be allowed to be registered. The federal government led by Transport Minister Wissing made it possible to buy certain combustion cars in the future – provided they run on climate-neutral synthetic fuels, so-called e-fuels.

Discussions on the topic are currently underway with the EU Commission. “We have a clear position and we are of the opinion that we can achieve a result,” said Wissing. He is confident that this will succeed.
