Trade: British logistics industry expects bottlenecks

Shops in the UK may have less choice over Christmas. The reason is still the lack of truck drivers.

The UK logistics industry expects bottlenecks and delays over Christmas. “Christmas is still a challenge for us,” said a spokesman for the Road Haulage Association of the dpa.

It is expected that there will be less choice in shops than usual. Customers would have to wait longer for the goods of their choice.

There are no truck drivers

There are still tens of thousands of truck drivers missing in Great Britain. This shortage had caused massive problems in the past few months: petrol stations ran out of fuel, and there are large gaps on the shelves in supermarkets. Many drivers from Eastern Europe who previously drove the goods from A to B had left the country during the pandemic. After Brexit, living and working in Great Britain is no longer possible for EU citizens without hurdles.

The UK government responded to the problem by issuing several thousand temporary emergency visas and speeding up the issuance of driving licenses. According to the Road Haulage Association, there is still a shortage of 85,000 truck drivers. The association had previously put the shortage at 100,000 drivers.
