There, too, the signs now point to a strike. After two failed rounds of negotiations, combat measures were unanimously decided at an Austria-wide works council conference and the union was instructed to obtain permission to strike, the union announced on Thursday.

“We are preparing for tough disputes, but are also ready to negotiate if the employers submit an improved offer in the meantime,” says Christine Heitzinger, chairwoman of the services department in the vida union and vida-KV negotiation manager. As with employees, employers also offered a wage increase of 8 percent for retail workers. But the union wants at least a deal at the level of rolling inflation, which was 9.2 percent.
Warning strikes throughout Austria
Warning strikes and public actions have recently taken place among employees throughout Austria. The union protest measures will continue until Friday, but no major actions are planned before Christmas, the union said on Wednesday.
Usually, the social partners first agree on a salary agreement for the 430,000 commercial employees, followed by the workers.
