Grünheide: Tesla factory: Steinbach sees an opportunity for approval

Environmental associations are critical of the project – but the Brandenburg Minister of Economic Affairs believes that Tesla will get environmental approval for building the car factory.

Brandenburg’s Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) has shown himself confident that the US electric car manufacturer Tesla could get environmental approval for the factory in Grünheide near Berlin.

“From the point of view of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, no reasons for refusal of the approval are recognizable at the moment, provided that no unforeseeable events occur during the approval process,” Steinbach said on request. Tesla has shown in the previous application process that everything will be done to remove obstacles to approval. He cited the reduced water requirement as an example.

However, environmental groups are critical of the project. The approval process by the state of Brandenburg is delayed because Tesla has submitted a new application for the car factory, including a battery factory. Production was originally planned to start in July, but Tesla is now expecting the end of 2021.
