Around nine billion liters of fuel were consumed in Austria in 2023 – the downward trend of previous years continued, the trade association of the petroleum industry (FVMI) announced on Monday. According to market estimates, in 2022 there were around 9.24 billion liters and in 2019 around 10.54 billion liters.
In the previous year, around 6.86 billion liters of fuel were diesel and 2.14 billion liters were gasoline. A 5.5 percent lower diesel consumption was compared to a 7.8 percent higher gasoline consumption. In its market assessment, the trade association recorded a decline of 8.6 percent for heating oil.
“The trend of previous years with a minus for diesel and heating oil and a plus for gasoline has continued in 2023,” said FVMI managing director Hedwig Doloszeski. On the one hand, the industry is faced with the challenge of achieving the transformation towards a climate-neutral system. “At the same time, it is necessary to ensure conventional – that is, fossil-based – energy supply until the transition in order to secure supply,” said Doloszeski.
