Car manufacturer: Volkswagen will increase deliveries in 2023

Things are clearly improving again for the car company from Wolfsburg: Volkswagen is selling more cars and can also score points in the important sales market of China.

The Volkswagen Group sold significantly more vehicles across the group last year than in the weak previous year. The group delivered 9.24 million vehicles of all group brands worldwide – twelve percent more than in the previous year, as the Wolfsburg-based company announced. The self-imposed target of 9 to 9.5 million deliveries was thus achieved.

In China, the most important individual market, sales were also slightly above the previous year’s level due to a strong year-end spurt. 3.24 million vehicles were delivered there in the full year, two percent more than in 2022.

“Despite many challenges in the last twelve months, we have increased our global deliveries by twelve percent to 9.24 million vehicles,” commented Group Sales Director Hildegard Wortmann, according to the statement. “This is a solid achievement given the geopolitical and economic conditions.” VW has therefore grown faster than the overall market and has slightly expanded its global market share.

Deliveries of electric cars rose by 35 percent

In 2022, Europe’s largest car manufacturer only delivered 8.3 million vehicles worldwide. Delivery difficulties for individual parts such as electronic chips had slowed sales.

The group was able to increase the number of fully electric cars in 2023. Deliveries of purely electric cars rose by 35 percent year-on-year to around 770,000. Battery cars therefore accounted for 8.3 percent of total sales. This means that Volkswagen is not yet as advanced as a mass manufacturer as others. In the BMW Group, electric cars already accounted for 15 percent of sales last year.

The Wolfsburg core brand VW had already reported an increase of 6.7 percent to 4.87 million deliveries for 2023 in the morning. The group initially did not provide any information about the other brands. The complete report on deliveries in 2023 is due to be presented on Friday.
