Russia overtook Switzerland in export of chocolate and entered the top 10 exporters of the world

In the first eight months of 2021, Russia ranked tenth in the world ranking of chocolate exporters, overtaking Switzerland. This is stated in the message of the Association of Confectionery Industry “Askond”, which refers to the reports of ITC Trademap and UN Comtrade.

As of September 2021, Russia exported $ 838 million worth of chocolate products in annual terms.In the same period, the export of such products from Switzerland amounted to $ 819 million.

In 2020, Russia ranked 11th in the world ranking of exporters of chocolate products, exporting 295.7 thousand tons for the amount of $ 729.2 million.Switzerland was in 10th place with the result of 109.8 thousand tons for the amount of $ 753 million

According to Askond estimates, this year the share of the export direction of the confectionery industry will grow by 19.1% in kind. The volume of deliveries of Russian sweets abroad will amount to 824.5 thousand tons in the amount of $ 1.68 billion. According to the association, these figures will become a record for the industry and will exceed the volume of exports in the pre-pandemic 2019 by 30.8%.

Chocolate confectionery products occupy a significant part in the structure of Russian exports, the report says. As of September of this year, they accounted for more than 51.5%, or $ 838.5 million in sales over the past 12 months.

“The dynamics of supplies abroad allows us to assert that by the end of the year Russia will strengthen its position in the top ten world exporters of this type of sweets”, – noted in “Askond”.

Now confectionery products from Russia are supplied to 92 countries. The main buyers remain China and the countries of the Customs Union, which account for 57% of export supplies. Exports are also growing due to sales in relatively new directions for domestic confectioners – Serbia, Brazil, Nigeria and the countries of the Middle East.

In September, the Rosselkhozbank reported that chocolate from Russia appeared in the top ten most exported product categories in the first six months of 2021, and supplies abroad increased by 23%, reaching $ 340 million compared to the same period last year. Russian chocolate became Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and China.
