The training and further education activity of 25 to 64 year olds in Austria has recently fallen slightly: In the 2022/23 adult education survey by Statistics Austria, 58 percent stated that they had taken part in formal (regular school and university systems) or non-formal educational activities ( To have participated in further training in courses, seminars, workshops, lectures, on-the-job training, private lessons). That is a decrease of 1.9 percent compared to 2016/17.

The decline is almost entirely attributable to men, whose participation rate fell from 61.1 to 57.5 percent. They were therefore overtaken by women, whose training and further education activity remained practically constant at just under 59 percent. Participation in training or further education measures increases with the level of education.
By age group, the declines were primarily recorded among 35 to 44 year olds (minus 5.4 percentage points to 62.1 percent) and 45 to 54 year olds (minus two percentage points to 58.7 percent). In the youngest age group, 25 to 34 year olds, the participation rate remained practically the same at just over 69 percent, while in the oldest group (55 to 64 year olds) there was an increase of 2.1 percentage points to 43.4 percent .
Less interest in courses
According to educational activities, there was a slight increase of 0.8 percentage points to seven percent in formal activities, while participation in further training in courses, seminars, workshops, lectures, training at the workplace or in private lessons increased by 2.9 percentage points to 55.5 percent sank.
