Climate money should come, but when? Most recently it was said that the payment was no longer planned for this election period. The Greens in the Bundestag have other plans.
The Greens in the Bundestag are demanding that the planned climate money be paid out to relieve the burden on citizens in the event of rising CO2 prices during this electoral period.
The payment mechanism should now be in place until 2025, but the payment should not yet be made “for budgetary reasons,” said the First Parliamentary Managing Director of the Green Party, Irene Mihalic, in Berlin. “So I have no understanding of that at all. And my group has no understanding of that either.”
The Green MPs are of the opinion that if the payment mechanism is in place, the climate money must also be paid out. “Yes, what else?” said Mihalic.
Climate money should be introduced by 2027 at the latest
According to the latest information from the federal government, climate money is to be introduced by 2027 at the latest. The next federal election is scheduled for autumn 2025. The traffic light parties SPD, Greens and FDP had planned the project in the coalition agreement. The background is the rising price of CO, which makes heating with gas and oil and refueling more expensive. To compensate, money should be put into citizens’ accounts. Given the tight budget, it is unclear whether the federal government can afford this.
Mihalic admitted that the coalition agreement does not explicitly state that the climate money should be paid out during the current election period. “But it is of course clear that we are doing everything we can to get climate money off the ground during this election period. Because the coalition agreement was also written for this election period.” Mihalic said that climate money is an important measure “to effectively relieve people of the possible burdens and financial consequences of climate protection.”
There is currently no channel through which the state could transfer money to all citizens. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) should create the conditions for this. Mihalic called it “unfortunate” that this had not been possible for two years.
