Between August 2022 and July 2023, people in Germany drank an average of 19.2 bottles of wine. In the same period last year there was just under one bottle more.
In the last financial year, people in Germany once again drank around one less bottle of wine per person than in the same period last year. This was reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI) in Bodenheim, Rhine-Hesse. Wine consumption has statistically fallen from 19.9 to 19.2 liters per person compared to the same period last year.
The basis of the data is the so-called wine consumption balance. This reflects wine purchases in stores and from producers as well as the quantities of wine drunk outside the home, said the DWI. The last wine year ran from August 2022 to the end of July 2023.
When calculated for people over the age of 16 – the age at which wine can be drunk – statistics show that a whole liter of wine was drunk less: 22.5 liters instead of 23.6 liters in the same period last year. The decline in wine reflects both changing consumer behavior and demographic change, noted DWI managing director Monika Reule.
Per capita sparkling wine consumption, however, remained constant over the comparison period at 3.2 liters based on the total population and 3.8 liters per person over 16 years of age.
