Green Week: Özdemir: Secure nutrition contribution to peace

“By helping others, we help ourselves,” says the Federal Agriculture Minister and explains why the fight against hunger is also politically important.

Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir emphasized the importance of the fight against hunger for global security. “Secure food is a contribution to peace,” said the Green politician on Saturday before a conference of agriculture ministers with government representatives from around 70 countries in Berlin. Of the eight billion people, one in ten currently goes to bed hungry. The climate crisis, Russia’s war against Ukraine and other conflicts exacerbated the situation. Global cooperation is about transferring knowledge and strengthening self-sufficiency.

Özdemir defended Germany’s international commitment against general criticism that financial resources should not be used in the world, but in Germany. “By helping others, we help ourselves.” This contributes to making the world safer. For Brazil, which holds the presidency of the G20 group this year, Agriculture Minister Paulo Teixeira highlighted the important role of small farmers and women. The African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Josefa Sacko, pointed out the shocks of the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine for the food situation in Africa. This made clear the importance of cooperation for better care.
