For the hospitality industry, there was slight growth in sales thanks to the openings this May. However, the level of last year could not be reached.
Sales in the German hospitality industry are only slowly recovering from the renewed Corona restrictions in spring. It is true that innkeepers and hoteliers posted more income in May, both price-adjusted (plus 13.7 percent) and nominally (plus 14.2 percent), than in April of the current year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday.
Compared to May 2020, however, according to calculations by the Wiesbaden authority, sales were price-adjusted (real) 1.7 percent lower.
“At the beginning of May 2020 restaurants and pubs were allowed to reopen under certain conditions – in May 2021 the opening steps were only implemented in the middle of the month and depending on the incidence regionally differently,” explained the statisticians. “This is likely to have depressed sales in May 2021 more than in the same month of the previous year.” In the meantime, things went better in accommodation establishments than in May 2020, when hotels were even more restricted in their operations.
Over the year as a whole, the industry is still lagging significantly behind: From January to May 2021 inclusive, sales in real terms were 46.6 percent below the level of the first five months of 2020, nominally the minus 44.8 percent.
