Food & Drink: A clay pot gets color – Römertopf should become more modern

The new investor wants to bring momentum to the Römertopf brand and is relying on color to achieve this. And there is also news about the production location.

The Roman pot gets a new look: a colored glaze is intended to give the traditional product a more modern look. “The functionality is identical, but the look is different,” said Andreas Osterhoff, Managing Director of POS Handels GmbH. The company from Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia acquired the trademark rights of the insolvent ceramics company Römertopf from Rhineland-Palatinate in November.

“It’s no longer mom who stands in the kitchen and closes the door. Instead, we have large, modern kitchen-living rooms where people cook together.” The brand has slept a bit in the past. The new product line with colored glazed goods is scheduled to be presented at the ambiente trade fair in Frankfurt at the end of January.

The Römertopf is an oval clay pot with a lid. Meat and vegetables can be cooked together in the oven. The Römertopf was presented at the Hanover Fair in 1967. According to the company, more than 50 million Roman pots have been sold since the 1970s. The company filed for bankruptcy at the end of June, citing a decline in sales at the start of the war in Ukraine as the main reason.

POS had already announced last year that it wanted to produce in Western Europe. “There is no longer active production at the old location,” said Osterhoff. It is expected to be closed by the insolvency administrator in the first quarter. “At the same time, we are working on re-establishing a production site in the Westerwald,” said Osterhoff. But the company will not operate it itself. “We are in discussions and things are progressing well. I am confident that we will be ready for production there this year.”
