The Argentine Agroindustrial Council put exact numbers on the consequences of the drought on foreign sales of farm products.

In 2023, Exports from the agroindustrial complex reached US$35,241.4 million and marked a decrease of US$18,869 million (- 34.9%) regarding 2022 in Argentina. Meanwhile, in December, the total was US$2,511.4 million, US$888 million less than in December of the previous year, with a drop of 26.1% year-on-yearbut an increase of 15% compared to the immediately previous month (November 2023).

These data were given as consequence of the severe drought that the Argentine countryside suffered last year and that had a strong impact on the yields of the agricultural sector. A loss of around US$20 billion was estimated for the year, as confirmed by the reported numbers.

Data from the Argentine Agroindustrial Council reflect that the soybean complexes (with a drop of US$9,342 million), wheat (-US$3,300 million) and corn (-US$3,100 million) were the ones with the greatest contribution to the interannual fall accumulated. While pears and apples (+u$s29,890 million), potatoes (+4.3% with an increase of $13,203 million), other fruit crops (+u$s11,5139 million) and nanisero (+u$s7. 015 million) are the ones that cushioned the decline the most.

The sectors that grew the most

The beef and leather sector recorded sales abroad for US$3,111.77 million, which represents 8.8% of the agroindustrial sector. The fishing vessel accumulated a total of US$1,757.26 million in exports, which is equivalent to 5% of the complex’s total sales.

The wine sector recorded exports of US$810.21 million, which represented a decrease of 19.5% in the year.
