The Capital Watch Award was presented for the sixth time at the Rosewood Hotel in Munich. The eleven winners prevailed against more competition than ever before. Around 60 watch manufacturers entered a total of 200 models into the race.
From these, the final field of 36 timepieces emerged, nominated in eleven categories – from “Innovation” to “Women” to “Sport” – and finally, after the jury’s verdict, the prize winners. They can look forward to a trophy in the shape of the capital “C” designed exclusively by Zwiesel Kristallglas, hand-produced and laser-engraved.
The 20-person jury included jewelry entrepreneur Kim-Eva Wempe, celebrity chef Tim Raue, architect and designer Matteo Thun, Tim Stracke (Chrono24 advisory board) and Franka Haiderer, head of Sotheby’s Germany.
Tough competition
There was once again a particularly exciting race in the categories for women’s and sports watches, where three brands instead of four made it to the final. The jury ultimately voted for the “Luminor Due Pastello” from Panerai in “Women” and the “Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona” in platinum from Rolex in “Sport”.
Winners and nominees: These are the best watches of 2023
For the models “under 5000 euros” there was a German-Swiss competition – between Nomos Glashütte, Oris, Sinn and Union Glashütte – which Nomos Glashütte ultimately won with the “Club Sport Neomatik 39 Tabac”. In the Smart Watches category, TAG Heuer picked up its second Capital Watch Award, this time for a special Golf version of its “Connected Caliber E4”.
In the “Métiers d’Art” category, where watches are more works of art than instruments for measuring time, a homage to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel beat the competition by a wide margin. The highly detailed dial with typical tweed fabric under a strongly curved glass lid, which is supposed to be reminiscent of a pincushion, impressed the expert jury.
In the coveted “Innovation” category, the “Speedmaster Super Racing” from Omega triumphed, in whose factory the in-house Spirate system celebrated its world premiere: a balance spring mechanism that allows fine adjustment of the accuracy. This means that the watch runs precisely up to a maximum of plus two seconds per day.
