In France, farmers have also been taking to the streets for days. They protest against falling revenues, European environmental regulations and standards that they believe are getting out of hand.
After days of protests by farmers in France, agricultural unions have called for a blockade of Paris. From Friday afternoon, five highways in the direction of the capital should be blocked, according to a call reported by the broadcaster France Info.
Also on Friday, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal wanted to announce concrete help for farmers. They continued their blockades of highways in many parts of the country on Thursday. Farmers dumped manure and straw in front of administrative buildings and some supermarkets. The Interior Ministry ordered the police to exercise restraint.
The unions presented the government with a list of demands on Wednesday evening. They are therefore demanding emergency aid for the sectors that are doing the worst – especially organic farming and viticulture, as well as compensation for the higher diesel prices. In addition, regulations on water withdrawal and the use of plant protection products should be withdrawn.
The protests were also joined by fishermen, who for the first time were subject to a one-month fishing ban to protect dolphins on the Atlantic coast.
