Fees for non-subsidized private schools will increase by 50% on average in the month of March. The data arises from an exhaustive survey carried out by the Association of Private Educational Institutions of Buenos Aires. In the case of institutions that have state support, The agreed increase will be 30%. This is an increase that will later be complemented by others. The Ministry of Commerce will no longer play any role in the negotiation.

The third month of the year is usually seasonally high in terms of price variation. In a regime of high inflation, the return to classes massively adjusts the Education category in the measurement carried out by the INDEC. This year will not be the exception. To the basket of school supplies, there will be added steep increases in the fees of private and semi-private schools.

The first section of these increases already has confirmed information: They will be on average 50% for institutions that do not have a subsidy. This was confirmed to Ambit from the association that carried out a massive survey. In the case of those that have the support of the State in the City and Province of Buenos Aires, the agreed increase will reach 30%.

In any case, the institutions have already warned that it will not be the only increase of the semester: “It is a first increase that does not take into account the last 25% increase that was granted this month to workers, who currently represent the main cost of the business.“, sources from the sector stressed in dialogue with this medium.

This Monday the Ministry of Commerce published a resolution in the Official Gazette repealing the regulations for private schools. The measure establishes that starting in February, schools will be able to increase the value of fees without previously informing the office that until today was in charge of approving or rejecting them. This rule has been in force since 2019.

Provincial governments are already on alert for a possible sharp rise in public school enrollment. They believe that many families will abandon the private sector due to the impossibility of addressing fees. A phenomenon similar to the one that prepaid medicine companies have already warned will be recorded this year. In the province of Buenos Aires they have already noticed a significant increase in registrations, but they believe that the true parameter will be seen once the first quarter is over.

March is the date that everyone looks closely at. It will be an especially challenging month in terms of inflation. To the increases in the education sector will be added the strong increases that expected for rates. Consulting firms specialized in the sector already estimate that between transportation updates, distribution and the removal of subsidies, it will imply a jump of more than 30%% in user bills.
