Drinks: Breweries are selling less beer

The German brewing industry continues to experience a sales crisis. The main reasons: demographic developments and the trend towards non-alcoholic drinks.

The sales crisis for breweries in Germany continues. Last year they were able to sell 8.4 billion liters of beer, around 4.5 percent less than the year before, as the Federal Statistical Office reported on Thursday. After a slight increase in 2022, the long-term trend continued.

The main reasons are demographic developments and the trend towards non-alcoholic drinks. Since 1993, beer sales in Germany have fallen by more than a quarter.

Last year, exports weakened even more sharply, with a volume decline of 5.9 percent, than domestic consumption, which fell by 4.2 percent. The German Brewers’ Association speaks of a “ravely black year for the German brewing industry”. Companies are caught between high cost pressure, consumer restraint and retail price pressure.
