In Upper Austria, the unemployment rate rose to six percent in January, compared to 5.2 percent in the previous year. The increase of 0.8 percent is the highest in a federal state comparison. 43,420 Upper Austrians (almost two thirds of them men) were registered as unemployed, and the number of employed people was 683,000.

Unemployment rose by 12.3 percent among women and by 16.7 percent among men. The greatest increase occurred among young people (under 25 years of age), with the number of pre-registered people increasing by more than a quarter. Unemployment among people over 55 rose by four percent compared to the previous year. People who have at most a compulsory qualification make up almost half of all unemployed people in the state.
“Development remains robust”
“We are now feeling the tail end of the weakened economy coupled with seasonal winter unemployment. However, when viewed over the long term, the development of the Upper Austrian labor market remains robust. We see signs of an expected trend reversal in the high proportion of hiring commitments from companies signal that they want to bring their now laid-off employees back into employment,” says Markus Litzlbauer, deputy regional manager of the Upper Austria Public Employment Service (AMS).

At the end of January, there were 22,499 vacancies available at the AMS Upper Austria, 8,182 or 26.7 percent fewer than in the previous year. In addition, there were 1,566 immediately available apprenticeship positions (minus 12.6 percent) and 640 immediately available apprenticeship seekers (plus 20.1 percent compared to the previous year).
