Air traffic: Fewer flight passengers than before Corona

German air traffic has still not recovered from the corona pandemic. There were only half as many passengers on domestic flights as before the pandemic.

There were significantly more passengers traveling at German airports last year than the year before. 185.2 million passengers represented an increase of 19.3 percent compared to 2022, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. However, German air traffic has still not recovered from the Corona slump.

Fewer passengers were counted, especially on domestic German routes, than in 2019, the last year before the pandemic. There were around 18.3 percent fewer passengers traveling on European and long-haul flights in 2023 than in the record year of 2019. Within Germany, the volume was just under half as large as four years earlier at 49.6 percent. The guests from the 23 main German airports were recorded.

The fluctuations in freight, which experienced a boom during the Corona period due to closed ports, were significantly lower. 4.6 million tonnes in 2023 represented a decrease of 7.1 percent compared to the previous year and a decrease of 2.3 percent compared to 2019.
