Before the vote on the planned EU supply chain law next Friday, numerous environmental protection organizations, non-governmental organizations and political actors are appealing to Economics Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) to agree to the compromise reached. While Justice Minister Alma Zadić (Greens) has already confirmed her approval, Kocher’s position is not known and was criticized in several broadcasts on Monday.

The reason for concern is Germany’s unclear position. Due to the sudden resistance of the German FDP, there is now a risk of abstention from Germany.

Austria’s approval is currently still open. “The final draft of the directive was sent this morning. This is currently being examined. A final decision can only be made after the examination. At the same time, discussions with the coalition partner are ongoing,” said the Ministry of Economic Affairs on Monday in response to an APA request.

The EU Supply Chain Act aims to hold large companies accountable if they profit from child or forced labor outside the EU. Larger companies must also create a plan to ensure that their business model and strategy are compatible with meeting the Paris climate goals to limit global warming.

In December 2023, after months of negotiations in the trilogue, the Council, Parliament and Commission agreed on a compromise for the EU supply chain law. This compromise is to be confirmed in the Committee of Permanent Representatives on Friday.
