Day of Love: Price increase for cut flowers on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For many people, this is the perfect occasion to give flowers to their loved ones. That has its price. And what about chocolates?

If you want to give a classic bouquet of flowers for Valentine’s Day this Wednesday, you will probably have to dig deeper into your pockets than the rest of the year. At least the Federal Statistical Office recorded prices for cut flowers in February of last year that were 3.0 percent higher than the annual average.

Compared to the same month last year, these were even 9.1 percent more expensive, while general consumer prices only rose by 5.9 percent. “Prices for cut flowers are often higher in February than in other months of the year,” explained the statisticians.

The chocolates, which are also popular as gifts, were, like the flowers, more expensive than average in February 2023 at 8.3 percent than a year before. Last year, frugal gift givers were more likely to be invited to the cinema, theater or concert: according to the Federal Office, prices here only increased by 4.3 percent.
