Uncertainty is currently not only shaping global events, but often also companies. This means new challenges for managers who need to develop more than ever. The dean of the Executive Academy of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), Barbara Stöttinger, is concerned with which priorities should be set in further training. The educational institution offers numerous continuing education programs.
“In the new year, leadership development will focus more strongly than before on putting the individual and their development at the center,” says Stöttinger. Especially in uncertain times, managers need to set a clear direction more than ever, and their own values, goals and plans need to be clearly defined. The exchange between managers and mentoring are also helpful.
In addition to personal skills, it is also crucial whether the manager himself is technologically “fit” and able to connect, says Stöttinger. Dealing with artificial intelligence (AI) should be at the top of the agenda: “The rule of thumb is: use AI where it creates added value for people in the company, and leave it out where it increases complexity or puts employees at a disadvantage as a result of the application of AI.”
When it comes to sustainability management, managers must involve the entire organization, says the dean. The topic is too complex to simply be imposed from above: large chunks have to be broken down into manageable aspects.
