Everything you need to know to use credit and debit cards abroad

The expenses will arrive in the next summary, expressed in dollars and can be paid in dollars, using savings or in pesos, at the official price of the day, plus a 65% surcharge (30% “PAIS tax” and 35% as an advance on income taxes).

The cards can also be used to withdraw dollars, euros or other foreign currencies, in an ATM abroad and the current limit is 50 dollars in neighboring countries and 200 dollars in the rest of the world.

These maximum amounts govern per operation and it is possible to make more than one, up to the advance limit set by the bank, but it must be taken into account that these operations are loans and generate expensive interest and commissions.

To use debit cards abroad, it is not necessary to have a savings account in dollars and those who only have an account in pesos can use their card outside the country to operate in foreign currency.

If those who are abroad have an account in pesos and also one in dollars, both linked to the same card, they have the right to decide in which of their accounts they will make the debits, a choice that can be made through home banking or other channels that the bank offers.

At the moment, debit cards do not have limits for these operations and money is taken from a savings account in dollars, the traveler will be able to consume goods and services in foreign currency until the funds are exhausted. If the card debits the money from a savings bank in pesos, the same criteria applies but each dollar spent will be pesified at the official exchange rate plus 65% surcharge, on the day the operation was carried out.

Debit cards can also be used to withdraw foreign currency at foreign ATMs but it must be borne in mind that if funds are debited from a savings account in dollars, travelers can withdraw cash for the equivalent of everything they have deposited on the account.

On the contrary, if the funds are debited from a savings account in pesos, the operation is taken as a purchase of dollars by home banking and the “solidarity” exchange rate will govern and the withdrawal limit will be what remains of the 200 quota dollars per month.

Previously, it is convenient to find out how much the commissions are charged in these cases, on the one hand, the bank that issued the debit card and, on the other hand, the network to which the ATM of the card belongs.

As these are charges for operation, abroad it will always be more convenient to extract everything that is going to be needed on the trip at once, instead of making several small withdrawals.

Before making a trip in which it is assumed that the cards will be used, it is important to notify about the destination countries and the dates of departure and return, from the home banking or the official website of the cards.

It is also useful to ask the issuing bank to increase the limits of the credit card, and adjust the purchase and withdrawal limits of the debit card according to what may be needed during the stay.
