Camera manufacturer: Leica Camera Group achieves record sales again

Photo art and luxury determine the strategy of the company from Central Hesse. The iconic brand shouldn’t just work on cameras.

The camera manufacturer Leica has increased its sales to a record level for the third time in a row. The traditional optics company from Wetzlar increased revenues to 485 million euros in the 2022/2023 financial year (March 30, 2023), among other things, with new products, as it reported. That was an increase of 9 percent compared to the previous financial year. The Leica Camera Group, which is owned by majority shareholder Andreas Kaufmann and US investor Blackstone, does not publish profit figures.

With the new M11-P 35mm camera, Leica is taking a stand against fake photos and artificially generated images, emphasized CEO Matthias Harsch. The camera provides the image files with digital copyright certificates. With further innovative products and the expansion of the global sales network, the company expects positive sales development in the current financial year. Leica shops were opened in Paris, Mexico City, Amsterdam and New York, among others.

In addition to the well-known cameras and sports optics devices, the company occupies other business areas. The Leitz Phone, which has so far only been sold in Japan, is to be further developed. Leica also wants to enter the home cinema market with a TV projector. There are also watches and spectacle lenses through subsidiaries.
